Everyday we rank things. We prefer certain things to others, and sometimes have to go with our second or third choice. What if we could vote in real elections this way? IRV is now used in eight cities across the country and has been adopted and slated for use in over a dozen others – including in Minneapolis in 2009!
IRV simplifies voting and increases choice by taking out the primary in local nonpartisan elections, by putting all candidates on a single ballot and by letting voters rank them in order of their preference. If no candidate wins with a majority (in a single-seat election) in the first round, then there is arunoff. The lowest vote-getter is eliminated from the race, and if youvoted for that candidate, your second preference is counted in therunoff (the next round of counting). IRV eliminates "spoiler votes," allowing voters to express their conscience in confidence, and increases participation through diversity of candidates and issues.
