Minneapolis IRV implementation takes big step forward

October 1, 2008 - Yesterday, the City of Minneapolis Elections Office recommended implementation of instant runoff voting (or ranked choice voting) for the 2009 municipal elections using a combination of current equipment and a hand count of those races in which candidates do not reach the threshold for election.

FairVote Minnesota is a co-defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Minneapolis Voters Alliance challenging the constitutionality of instant runoff voting (IRV) and right of Minneapolis, as a home-rule charter city, to use IRV under Minnesota election law.

A recent MPR News/U of M Humphrey Institute poll on Minnesota's U.S. Senate race and the presidential election found that 77 percent of likely voters say they would consider voting for an independent or third-party candidate.
